How Do I Frame Artwork?

How Do I Frame Artwork?

It's a question I often get asked when someone buys a painting so here are my handy tips on framing art.

Framing art is just as important as the painting itself. It's like you are dressing the art. The wrong frame (and its not driven by cost) can make a painting look poor, yet the perfect frame on what was perhaps a dull painting will completely transform it.

I am always amazed at how my paintings are transformed once framed!

Step 1.

What type of painting do you have? If it is oil or acrylic on canvas then it can be wrapped on wooden stretcher frames (if not already done) and then framed without a mount or glass. If you have a watercolour you will need to choose a mount and the frame and glass.
---
Tip: I always use Art Glass to reduce reflections. When light passes from air into glass and then back into air, the transitions cause part of it to be reflected. The framing service I use always offer Artglass AR coating, it alters the light transmission qualities of glass surfaces, virtually eliminating reflections and maximising light transmission. It is a little more expensive but well worth the investment...you will be looking at this art and enjoying it for years.

Step 2.

Select the frame first for the painting.  Here you can see I have chosen a heavy, vintage dark frame to draw your eye into the painting. The frame is meant to pull your eyes into the image in a subtle way. You must first suit the frame to the emotion of the painting.
---
---
In this example, I have taken a pen and wash drawing, used a clean white mount and chosen a gently scalloped and partly reflective frame. I could have chosen a frame with a little more green in it. Sometimes I add a small amount of paint that is the same colour as the painting, to the frame.
---
 ---
Frames can come in various materials, but the most common are wood, metal, glass, or plastic. Each material has its own variances, with different colours finishes, and styles.

---
Step 3.

You need to suit the frame to the room. If you want to play it safe, a plain black frame works with nearly every room, as you can see in the image on above. I could also have chosen a lighter black or a grey frame with small amounts of blue colour to tie in the blue theme of the bedroom.
---
Step 4. Width is another important consideration. Frames can come in all different types of widths. Antique frames tend to be wide, heavy, and ornate.
But modern and contemporary frames are typically thinner; they usually let the artwork take center stage and don’t try to steal the limelight. Good for abstract art. I especially love using 'floating' frames.

This is a collection of some of my favourites that go very well with my artwork.

If you are still stuck I can do all the hard work for you, I offer a full framing service with sales of my original art (additional charge applies) . If buying a limited edition print, you can select to have the painting framed and I will use my signature black frame to suit the painting.

Paper - My limited edition prints feature premium fine art paper. This is a museum-quality paper which reproduces photography and artworks with exceptional tonality and renders sharp details with consistent flatness and accuracy, my frames are created from high-quality wood, milled with simple clean lines and presented with a satin finish. Includes an off-white mount that will not discolour or fade with age.

Framed Prints

Glass - You can choose to have no glass, low reflection art glass or Gallery Perspex*. Please select the “framed” option and advise after checkout. If you don’t provide a preference I will choose Gallery Perspex for you.

*Gallery Perspex is used by all the leading art publishers.

Mount – This is the bit that goes between the print and the glass and frame. I use a thick 1.4mm window mount cut from premium, textured mountboard. All mounts are "conservation grade", FSC certified, 100% acid free, and will not discolour or fade with age.

Please do get in contact if you have any questions.
